How can I determine if my diff is LSD or not. After only 150 miles of driving the new to me 968 diff is making a medium loud ticking. SHop said diff going out.
To determine if diff is LSD or not, jack up both rear wheels and use jackstands to keep the wheels off the ground.
Put the car in neutral and rotate one of the rear wheels. If the other rear wheel turns in the same direction, you have LSD. If not, you don't.
By the way, if your transaxle needs rebuliding, it is not the job to assign to a one banana mechanic.... There are a few reputable 968 transaxle rebuilders around, but only a few.

Also make sure it's really the differential. CV joints are a common failure on these cars and they tick (up to clunk) at low speeds, especially when letting off gas...

Tom:
This is a higher pitch than my Z cars, affectionately called the "Z Clunk". Shop suggested try changing TA fluid.
Starting to get into the list. Been sitting for five years while seller was in middle east chasing bad guys. During that time someone put carpet on it. Beautiful finish was. toast. But it is only top of one fender and teh roof.
Found several good Utubes on how to fix sticky headlights if anyone is interested.
Also found a good one on how to fix buttons that control seats. BUT for someone who has shaky hands it is still going to be a challenge.
HOW MUCH FLUID DOES T/A HOLD.
THANKS

Assuming it's a 6-speed manual, the spec is a little over 3 quarts I believe, but it seems to fill up with maybe 2 and 2/3rds quarts. You fill it until the fluid starts to dribble out the upper fill port. Just be darn sure the fill port plug comes out before removing the lower drain plug. Otherwise you end up with an empty transaxle and no way to fill it. Ask me how I know!07turbeaux wrote: Sat Jan 31, 2026 6:24 pm Tom:

I've had both a self-destructing transaxle that ticked and bad CV joints, and the sound is pretty much the same. The difference is when the sound occurs -- CV joints tend to clunk at low speeds when getting on and off light power. The transaxle would click/clunk at seemingly random times, including cruising down the highway. Your results may differ.
You mentioned being an octogenarian and having shaking hands. I love that you are still working on cars! I have 17 years to go, but as I age I've learned that my work on cars gets slower every year, but no less rewarding or fun!! I also do a lot more research before picking up a wrench compared to the old days...
