Based on the concerns you and others outlined, I think that was a wise decision. The unknowns can end up being brutal to the wallet and one's mental well-being.

Regarding PPI, here in U.S. it generally refers to pre-owned vehicle purchases, especially older higher end classic or exotic vehicles (ie: expensive) where much is unknown and where risks are greatly magnified. A good expert for a particular make or model of car can illuminate problems via a pre-purchase inspection that buyers may not see and ones that sellers often hide or don't know about.

PPI is good protection from unscrupulous sellers and also gives a prospective buyer a better idea of what kind of money and how much work is going to be required. A quality PPI is well worth the cash outlay unless one knows what to look for, especially since advanced skills and knowledge of that sort are beyond the capabilities of many of us, myself included.

On the other hand, dealerships here refer to PDI (pre-delivery inspection) for new vehicle prep and inspection per manufacturer requirements, along with pre-sale detailing (well, a simple cleaning might be a better term), service checks, mop 'n glo and whatever other dealer add-ons there may be.

I was in the business for over 30+ years and I spent the major portion selling Vipers and other performance machines. When selling high end vehicles we automatically did a thorough inspection and having a used cars gone through helped build the Company's and my reputation. Whether it is called a PPI or PDI ( this usually refers to a new purchase ) asking plenty of questions is always a good thing. The fact that the car was not gone through, and in the end did not end up on the Porsche lot but one of their others is a telltale sign in my mind that it was not a quality Porsche. Good move on your part and no worries I am sure something much better will come along!
