I am told these GT4s are insanely good. Is this really true? I am looking to add another toy car in the stable but cannot resolve myself getting yet another Porsche. Feeling kind of bored with this "dark side of the motoring force" thing, if you see what I mean.

Hi Thom
The 981 GT4 ( which I have ) vs the 718 GT4.
I love this car … the new 718 might have more HP but I’m not really sure it’s that it is that pronounced?
The cost of the new 718 GT4 is significantly higher …
The 981 will save you a great deal of money also … but prices have really stayed high on the used car market lately…
I can’t say enough good things about this 981 GT4
Looks
Handling
Braking
Best manual shifter w/auto blip match reving
Accelerating (but it’s not a GT3 engine)
But it’s a blast to drive !
Awesome OEM stock exhaust no need to touch it
If you are not buying it as a track car, I would go with the PPCB’s
LWBS are a must for me … but to each his own.
If you’re really serious about buying one I’ll go though which options are good to go with …
Best regards
Ed

Ed, thanks for the feedback. I agree about the LWBS. A GT4 with the standard "comfort" seats is missing the point of these cars I think. I will probably have to test drive one to see what they are all about.
Enjoy yours!

Having been in Ed's cars, I'd add three thoughts:
1. It's the closest thing to a 951 that Porsche makes right now -- balanced, tossable, engaging, fast without being stupid fast, and just flat out fun to drive.
2. The exhaust note on the 981 GT4 is about as good as it gets. Driving along side Ed with my window down, the exhaust note when he floors it will make you want to own one. It's surprising they can even sell them that way. The new GT4's sound "good" but not the same...
3. LWBS must be awesome, but I'd stand a better chance of squeezing my head into a beer can.

There’s certainly a different characteristic in the sound from the 981 to 718. Those OPF filters are the issue and some over axle pipes solves it I would say. I’ve heard both stock 981 and stock 718 back to back as they drove an autocross course and from the outside I definitely prefer the sound of the 981 even though I’m a 718 owner.

I have a 718 Spyder, and owned a 981 Spyder prior. LOVE the 718, but like Ed said, the 981 is more melodious at low RPMs. I think they both sound pretty good above 6000 rpm.
I have a Kline exhaust on order which I hope will smooth out and bring back some of the multi layered harmonies.
